DESCRIPTION OF TAMARIND

The black tamarind tree, also called velvet tamarind, belongs to the legume family. It is often found in West and Central Africa; and presents itself under the name of “Solom” in Senegal, “Chat noir” in Ivory Coast, “Môké” in Guinea, “Assisouin” in Benin, and “Attitoè” in Togo. The tree is very often an average height of 30 meters with leaves of a whitish colour and produces a fruit covered with a black envelope within its centre a pulp of a more or less silvery colour. This fruit has the merit of being desired by many Togolese consumers of all age groups. Note that the bark, leaves and roots are also used for their therapeutic properties. “Attitoè” is rich in glucose, fructose, iron, magnesium, copper and protein. In the African tradition, its leaves, reduced to powder and consumed, would act as a powerful remineralize and would improve the health of the genital organs of men and women. The aqueous extract of the bark would be used to remedy gastrointestinal disorders (diarrhoea, ulcers, haemorrhoids) and even respiratory infections (bronchitis, severe cough). The branches are also used as toothpicks.
The Togolese have reason to appreciate this fruit despite being unaware of its virtues. It should be noted that these virtues must be confirmed by advanced scientific studies so that we become aware of the treasures we have in Africa.

The therapeutic properties of tamarind are numerous. Indeed the tamarind has:

Antiseptic properties

Thanks to its antiseptic properties, tamarind is a very good fruit for treating many infections, especially urinary disorders such as cystitis. To benefit from its medicinal effects, you must consume it as an infusion, in the form of a refreshing drink. You can even cook tamarind leaves (soup or salad) which are full of vitamins and minerals. Know that tamarind has an effective action against bacteria. This makes it a natural remedy to fight against dermatological conditions.

Relieves digestive disorders

There is a very high amount of tartaric acid and potassium in tamarind, two substances that make it an excellent natural and mild laxative. So, if you suffer from digestive disorders such as chronic constipation, do not hesitate to consume tamarind. It effectively protects the digestive system and improves intestinal transit. After every meal, especially after lunch, get into the habit of consuming tamarind tea. This fruit is also recommended for people who suffer from an ulcer.

Fights cell ageing

Its composition in, more particularly in its bark, makes it a perfect natural astringent. Tamarind also has a large number of vitamins (especially vitamin C) and antioxidants. Thus, if you eat tamarind regularly, it will delay the ageing of your cells as much as possible and improve the elasticity of your skin. Nothing like a natural solution to take care of our body!

Heals skin problems

Dermatoses, wounds, ? Use tamarind! Thanks to its high content of geraniol and limonene, it can be ingested or applied directly to the affected area. Yes, tamarind is a natural anti-infective capable of neutralizing the bacteria responsible for skin conditions. In addition to the tamarind infusion, you can make a decoction with the bark of the tamarind to treat dermatoses or other skin infections. To do this, cook a piece of bark (about 15 cm) in a litre of water for about 30 minutes. Then, leave to macerate for two hours before applying it to the affected areas. You can add one litre of decoction to ten litres of water for your baths. An ideal solution to prevent children's little sores from becoming infected.

Boosts the liver system

Did you know that eating tamarind every day helps cleanse vital organs, including the kidneys and liver? For the proper functioning of your liver, therefore, consider consuming tamarind regularly, preferably in all its forms!

Treats sore throats and respiratory problems

In herbal medicine, tamarind is used to treat bronchitis. This is because it acts as an expectorant which frees up the bronchial tubes and helps the patient to breathe better. Tamarind is also great for relieving sore throats. For this, it is recommended to take 2 to 3 cups of tamarind infusion per day. Count 20 g of pulp for one litre of water. For more efficiency, feel free to gargle with it!

Facilitates the teething of infants

You may not know it, but teething in infants can be an extremely delicate and very trying time for parents. It has been proven that tamarind is an effective remedy to facilitate the teething of babies. Gently apply a few drops of warm infusion to your gums. Know that the consumption of tamarind is also beneficial for people who suffer from gingivitis and canker sores. You can even make mouthwashes.
